29 October 2024 Members' News

Over the past decade, Zero Waste Scotland has transformed from an independent organisation into Scotland's public body dedicated to fostering a circular economy. This transition marks a pivotal shift toward a more sustainable economic framework, with the goal of reducing resource consumption and minimising waste. Through initiatives from 2014 to 2024, Zero Waste Scotland has influenced sectors across industry, commerce, local governance, and communities, highlighting the need for a systemic overhaul to achieve environmental sustainability while supporting economic well-being. Reflecting on the past decade, Zero Waste Scotland’s new report underscores progress in reducing landfill dependency, increasing reuse and recycling efforts, and prioritising the reduction of carbon emissions as key steps toward a sustainable, resource-efficient future.

Zero Waste Scotland next challenge is to bring these insights into mainstream awareness, demonstrating the need to rewire the economy for a truly circular approach. The new Corporate Plan, launching in November 2024, outlines this mission and calls for greater ambition and collaboration across sectors and government to solidify the case for a circular economy.
