In 2020, Wallonia collected 1 897 kilotonnes of household and similar waste, averaging 520 kg per person. The waste was composed of 52.4% household waste (27.7% mixed and 25.1% selectively collected) and 47.6% coarse fractions (21.7% bulky items, 16.4% inert waste, and 9.5% green waste). Between 2000 and 2010, mixed waste decreased by 21%, while selectively collected waste increased by 43%. From 2011 to 2020, both types of waste saw a gradual decrease, with a total of 273 kg per person in 2020.
The Walloon Waste Resources Plan, approved in 2018, aims to reduce waste to 501.2 kg per person by 2025. In 2020, 52.6% of the waste was sent for recycling or organic recovery, while 45.1% went to energy recovery. The proportion of waste incinerated without energy recovery was minimal, and disposal in landfills dropped significantly to 2.3%. Between 2010 and 2020, the amount of waste sent for recovery increased by 15.9%, with energy recovery seeing the largest rise (+44.2%), while waste sent to disposal centers decreased by 66.4%.
