14 January 2025 Members' News

OVAM has published the report "Waste Monitoring in Flanders 2023", revealing that 6 621 tonnes of waste were collected in Flanders in 2023, equivalent to 0.97 kg per inhabitant. The Flemish Materials Plan 2023-2030 aims to reduce litter by 20% by 2030. This baseline measurement highlights the need to avoid 1 324 tonnes of litter in the coming years. Of the total collected, 73.4% was cleared by street sweepers, 17.2% by volunteers, and the remaining 9.4% by street-sweeping vehicles.

In addition to litter statistics, the report also tracks the amount of waste properly disposed of in public bins, which totaled 13 333 tonnes in 2023. OVAM emphasises the importance of sustained efforts, including prevention, improved packaging, public awareness, infrastructure enhancements, and enforcement. Annual monitoring will ensure continued progress toward the 2030 goal, with a strong focus on reducing the environmental and social impacts of litter.
