The OVAM's 2023 report on household waste in Flanders highlights a reduction in residual waste to 126.4 kg per person, with a goal to bring this down to 100 kg by 2030. Achieving this target would reduce CO2 emissions, boost recycling, and reduce dependence on incineration facilities. Despite a slight increase in total waste to 421 kg per capita, primarily due to a rise in organic waste, 70% of all waste was sorted for recycling. However, after adjusting for sorting errors and safety exclusions, the effective recycling rate was 63%. Residual waste, which made up 75% of household waste just 30 years ago, is now down to 30%.
OVAM’s future strategies include mandatory organic waste collection from 2024, expanding local recycling initiatives, and promoting preventative measures, such as reusable packaging, product repair, and food waste reduction. These efforts aim to curb waste levels and keep them stable or declining by 2030.
