Municipality of Halandri | Introducing the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Unit

Municipality of Halandri, a new ACR+ member from the Athen’s metropolitan area, launched its Food Loss and Waste Prevention Unit in October 2022 to address food waste by engaging local society and stakeholders across the municipality. Supported by the FoodRUs project, the Unit focuses on assessing food waste, building capacity, fostering collaboration with retailers and consumers, and implementing strategies for prevention, redistribution, and upcycling. Key partners include the waste management department, public social services, schools, the National Technical University of Athens, and the HORECA sector. 
 
Through research, awareness campaigns, and activities like zero-waste cooking, school workshops, and open learning labs, Halandri has engaged over 10,000 citizens and 130 businesses. Key achievements include the "Cook Smart and Save Food" publication, awards like the Greek Green Awards 2023, and pioneering food upcycling collaborations. As Greece's first city in the Alliance for Reducing Food Waste, its Food Loss Unit stands as a national model for combating food waste.
