In 2024, Greater Pamplona collected 147 353 tonnes of waste, a 2.1% increase from 2023, driven by population growth and higher economic activity. Separate collection reached 83 322 tonnes (56.55% of the total), increasing by 2.4%. Among these, bio-waste accounted for 26 041 tonnes, paper-cardboard 21 042 tonnes (+1.7%), and packaging 15 758 tonnes (+8.5%). The implementation of the electronic card-access container system or smart containers has enabled more than 60% of waste to be collected separately, reducing residual waste by 40%.
Despite positive results in separate collection, the electronic card-access container system faces two key challenges: increased improper waste disposal and littering. These issues lead to higher collection costs, inefficiencies in recycling and recovery processes, and urban cleanliness problems.
