The "State of the Environment Report 2024" published by Brussels Environment highlights the current environmental situation in the Brussels-Capital Region. Based on data collected between 2019 and 2022, this biannual report helps the public understand the ongoing environmental pressures caused by local production, consumption, and transportation practices.
In terms of waste management, Brussels produced 2.43 million tonnes of waste in 2021, with the majority coming from construction and demolition activities. Although a significant portion of this waste, particularly from construction, is recycled or reused, there is still much room for improvement in municipal waste management. Currently, about 35% of municipal waste is recycled or reused, with a goal of 60% recycling by 2030. To meet these targets, Brussels has implemented measures like mandatory waste sorting and a ban on disposable packaging. However, reducing waste generation through prevention, reuse, and conscious consumption remains the most effective strategy for achieving environmental sustainability.
