Vitrus Ambiente | Guimarães Leads Nationally in Selective Food Waste Collection
A study released by the environmental association ZERO (Sustainable Earth System Association) is placing Guimarães at the forefront of national efforts in selective food waste collection in Portugal. Vitrus Ambiente has collected around 144 kilograms of food waste per person, according to data based on information from the Portuguese Regulatory Authority for Water and Waste Services, which tracks food waste collection across municipalities in 2024.
The study reveals that cities using the Door-to-Door collection model achieved results significantly higher than average, often doubling the results seen with other systems. Guimarães has successfully stabilised its Door-to-Door system in less than two years, covering 45 000 residents. In 2024, the city collected 6 608 tonnes of food waste, with 5 536 tonnes coming from households and 1 072 tonnes from the HORECA sector.
