Wallonia | New tool for the assessment of soil quality

31 March 2025 Members' News

Soils play a vital role in nourishing plants, regulating rainwater, storing carbon, and supporting biodiversity. However, they are often neglected and harmed by human activity. The IQSW-citoyen tool, developed as part of Wallonia's Recovery Plan, allows everyone to contribute to better understanding and protecting this valuable resource. This free, user-friendly tool enables citizens to assess their soil in just a few steps, without the need for expensive equipment.

The IQSW-citoyen tool helps answer key questions about soil, such as its fertility, water retention, and potential pollution. In four simple steps, citizens can analyse their soil's characteristics and receive personalised recommendations. For those specifically concerned with soil pollution, the Sanisol tool provides tailored advice on managing risks from contaminants like heavy metals, based on lab analysis, and offers guidance for gardeners working with potentially polluted soils.
