The Walthamstow Tool Library in North London, with over 3 000 loans in a year, demonstrates the environmental benefits of tool sharing. For an annual membership of GBP 10-30 (EUR 11.74- 35.23), locals can access nearly 500 tools, saving money and avoiding bulky storage. Operating for four years, the library has cut down carbon emissions by an estimated 25 tonnes annually by renting out rather than creating new tools. Managed by the Forest Recycling Project and supported by community volunteers, the library is part of a growing trend of ‘libraries of things’ that prioritise sustainability. The team plans to increase the membership of the library even more this year. They’ve secured funding from the North London Community Fund, run by the North London Waste Authority to support community-based waste reduction initiatives. They hope to work with other tool libraries to share what they’ve learned in their four years of operation and inspire others to start their own libraries.
