Greater Pamplona | Implementation of the electronic container opening system
The new phase of Greater Pamplona's electronic container opening system will be implemented from 10 March in Ansoáin and Villava, extending to other municipalities in the Pamplona area until June. This phase will cover 111 000 residents, bringing the system's reach to 345 000 people (95% of the population). The new system replaces container keys with an electronic card or mobile app for opening organic waste and residual waste containers.
The initiative aims to improve waste separation, increasing selective collection rates above 60%, compared to 40% in areas without the system. However, challenges such as improper disposal and waste left outside containers have led to higher collection costs and inefficiencies. A support team will assist the public at container sites. In critical areas, communication campaigns will emphasise proper waste disposal to reduce environmental impact.
