OVAM | Search for 95 million empty batteries in Flanders: mission possible

24 February 2025 Members' News

OVAM and Bebat (Belgian non-profit organisation that manages the collection, recycling and reuse of used batteries in Belgium) kicked off their annual campaign, urging Flemish households to collect empty batteries and drop them off at collection points between 17 February and 17 March. The goal is to gather 95 million batteries for recycling and reuse of valuable raw materials. On average, a Flemish family has 147 batteries at home, 32 of which are empty, often forgotten in old toys, garden sheds, or drawers. The Flemish Environment Minister emphasized the need to make battery recycling second nature, especially with raw material shortages. The campaign organisers call on people to unite in this effort, with 25 000 collection points available in Flanders.
