ARC | Plant improvements to treat 100 000 tonnes of waste annually

03 March 2025 Members' News

The improvements to the organic waste treatment plant in the Catalan region of Vallès Oriental will enable the transformation of 100 000 tonnes of waste per year into compost and biomethane starting next year. The Catalan Waste Agency (ARC) is investing EUR 65.3 million to modernise the facility, making it a key infrastructure for managing organic waste in Vallès Oriental and Maresme, with the potential to support nearby areas. The upgraded plant will process organic waste in two separate lines based on quality, increasing compost production for agriculture and gardening while also generating renewable energy through biogas and biomethane.

Construction is being carried out in two phases, with completion expected by the end of 2025 and testing set to begin in early 2026. In 2023, only one-third of the organic waste generated in the region was separately collected, highlighting significant potential for improvement. With an overall selective collection rate of 46.7%, Catalonia is working towards the European target of 55% recycling by 2025.
