On 21 May 2015, De Groene Zaak Sustainable Business Association, MVO Nederland and Circle Economy published a joint manifesto entitled “More prosperity, new jobs: Manifesto on Circular Economy Policy in the EU”. The manifesto serves as an input from a frontrunners’ business perspective for the renewed Circular Economy Package, expected to be retabled by the European Commission in autumn 2015.

This manifesto is also co-signed by EcoPreneur, Entreprendre Vert, Green Alliance, GreenBudgeEurope, INDR, Institut de l’Economie Circulaire, Plan C and UnternehmensGrün and supported by ACR+, Lipor (ACR+ member’s), the European Environmental Bureau and several other organisations.

The manifesto highlights the value of the circular economy and its benefits such as saving valuable resources, reduce environmental impacts, create jobs and strengthen European economy.

The policy recommendations for the European Commission are divided into the following categories:
  • Leadership: strong government policies
  • Introduce economic incentives
  • Adapt and exploit existing measures

ACR+, in a supportive statement, insists on the key role of local and regional authorities. Thanks to their competences, local and regional authorities are facilitators of circular economy and as such have to take part in the necessary cooperation between public and private sector. To boost circular economy in Europe, multistakeholders initiatives are needed, such as the Circular Economy Network, developed by ACR+. This working group on circular economy planning for cities and regions gathers ACR+ members committed to improving their resource strategies and strengthening the sustainable development of their territory.
