Each year, numerous waste items are collected on highways in Wallonia, requiring substantial budgets that could be allocated elsewhere. From mid-July to the end of August, SOFICO (Walloon company for the additional financing of infrastructure) is running a campaign to discourage littering and illegal dumping. In 2023, 767 tonnes of waste were collected, costing nearly EUR 3.5 million.

This year's campaign, "ArrĂȘtez d'en faire des tonnes" (Stop overdoing it), will be displayed from 15 July to 31 August on 300 billboards along Walloon highways and major roads, and will also feature a social media video. Littering fines include a minimum of EUR 200 for tossing items like cans or cigarette butts out of vehicles and EUR 300 for illegal dumping, such as leaving household waste in or near highway trash bins.
