Several coffee retailers have joined together in a project led by ACR+ member Cascais Ambiente, to give a new life to used coffee capsules, regardless of the brands and the materials they are made of. This partnership for a joint recycling process aims to collect the coffee capsules, which are currently sent to the undifferentiated waste stream or, worse still, contaminate other recyclable streams. For the collection and recycling of used coffee capsules, Cascais Ambiente thus increases the number of streams collected in the Ecocentre Network launched in 2021. The capsules will be separated and decomposed, in order to utilise all components for new uses. The plastic or aluminium casings will be transformed into new capsules and the coffee grounds will be used for natural compost.
