The European Commission is carrying out an impact assessment in preparation for the revision of the Waste Framework Directive. The objectives of the revision are to limit waste generation, increase re-use, and increase cost-efficient preparing for re-use and quality recycling, including for waste oils and textiles. As part of this impact assessment, the Commission will also examine policy options related to the setting of EU-level targets for food waste reduction. In this context, the European Commission is now carrying out a public consultation to collect additional evidence on existing performance; seeking opinions and insights about the problem, the feasibility and possible impacts of alternative actions; gathering examples of best practices and views on the subsidiarity of possible actions. ACR+ already contributed with a response to the Call for evidence earlier this year.

The Farm to Fork Strategy announced the initiative “Sustainable EU food system” to accelerate and facilitate the transition to sustainability and ensure that foods placed on the EU market increasingly become sustainable. It will lay down rules on sustainability labelling of food products, minimum criteria for sustainable public procurement of food, and governance and monitoring. In preparation of this initiative, the Commission is therefore launching a broad consultation process, aimed to gather views and input from all stakeholders.
