Sofia Municipality will open 58 new waste collection points in the districts of Ovcha Kupel, Ilinden, and Nadezhda in 2025, benefiting around 3 600 households. On 1 February, nine new collection points were launched in Ovcha Kupel, where residents received 500 biodegradable waste bins and bags. These enclosed spaces provide separate containers for plastic, glass, paper, food waste, and mixed household waste, aiming to improve recycling rates, reduce pollution, and decrease landfill waste.
The initiative is part of Municipal Council’s efforts to enhance waste management in high-rise residential areas. In 2024, Sofia achieved record results in waste separation. The city processed 8,413 tonnes of food waste, 17% more than in 2023, and collected 19 tonnes of hazardous household waste, nearly double the five-year average.
