Report urges EU leaders to strengthen role of local governments in next EU budget
The Local Alliance has released a crucial policy paper calling for the next EU budget (2028–2034) to become a robust tool for fostering a just, climate-neutral, and competitive Europe. The paper highlights the pivotal role of local and regional governments in implementing EU policies and achieving balanced territorial development. It also underscores the importance of safeguarding the Cohesion Policy, which has been instrumental in reducing inequalities and supporting sustainable growth across all territories.
Central to the Local Alliance's vision is the adoption of a place-based investment strategy and stronger multi-level governance, ensuring EU funds effectively address the needs of communities. Local governments already implement 70% of European Green Deal legislation and account for 69% of climate-related public spending, showcasing their critical role in tackling climate change and fostering digital transformation. The report urges EU leaders to empower local authorities by streamlining funding processes, enhancing governance, and ensuring equitable access to resources
The Local Alliance — a coalition of local and regional governments made of ACR+, CEMR, Climate Alliance, Energy Cities, Eurocities, FEDARENE, ICLEI Europe and POLIS, — is an informal coalition aiming at ensuring that our constituencies have the competencies and resources to implement the European Green Deal and reinforce Europe’s resiliency.
