OVAM | Eighth Littering and Illegal Dumping Enforcement Week

On 7 October, Mooimakers (the Flemish initiative against litter and illegal dumping by OVAM and others) kicks off the eighth Waste and Illegal Dumping Enforcement Week with over 173 local authorities and police zones. Waste management companies, municipalities, and police monitor waste and illegal dumping year-round. During this action week, Mooimakers will intensify these efforts, encouraging extra inspections and enforcement.

Mooimakers and local governments have collaborated for years to reduce litter and illegal dumping, achieving a 20% decrease in litter and a 3% drop in illegal dumping between 2019 and 2021. Since 2015, litter has decreased by 11%, but illegal dumping has risen by 27%, highlighting that the fight continues. In 2023, 83% of local authorities enforced these rules, issuing 19 861 fines, up from 17 263 in 2022.
