Reloop's latest factsheet "Deposit Return Systems: How They Perform" offers a comprehensive overview of the effectiveness of deposit return systems (DRS) worldwide. European nations implementing DRS demonstrate a notable median return rate of 91%, indicating the success of these systems in recovering substantial quantities of beverage containers. One of the standout findings is that regions with DRS consistently outperform those relying solely on municipal kerbside collection programs in terms of recycling rates for drink containers. This correlation underscores the significance of implementing DRS as a strategy for improving recycling outcomes. Moreover, the factsheet highlights a direct relationship between the deposit value and the return rate. Higher deposit amounts tend to incentivise greater participation among consumers, resulting in increased returns of beverage containers.
