Acting on a proposal from the Brussels Minister for the Environment and Social Action, the Brussels government adopted on second reading a draft ordinance setting out a framework for the management of unsold food in order to combat food waste while strengthening solidarity with the most disadvantaged. The ordinance will oblige Brussels supermarkets of more than 1000 m² to offer their unsold food first to charities, then to processing companies and then to private resale companies. Around a hundred supermarkets are affected. The text is now in the hands of the Council of State who will voice its opinion, before being voted by the Regional Parliament.
