Statistics Flanders has published two new Flemish Public Statistics based on the legally required reports that OVAM annually provides to Europe. These consist of data on packaging waste and waste shipments based on notifications. The overall recycling rate for packaging waste was 80% in Belgium in 2021. Selective collection of packaging waste has been established for many years, both for household and commercial packaging waste. Therefore, the figures have remained relatively stable at a high level in recent years. There are significant differences at the level of different material streams. For glass (98%), metals (97%), and paper/cardboard (89%), the recycling rates were very high in 2021. The recycling rates for wood (72%) and beverage cartons (71%) were slightly lower. The total export of waste from the Flemish Region was 2.4 million tonnes in 2021.
