Since June of last year, events in Flanders have only been allowed to serve beverages in reusable materials, with the exception of PET bottles and cans if the event organiser provides a system that collects at least 95% of these single-use containers for recycling. The ban was already in place for local and Flemish authorities' events. In this way, OVAM aims to gradually reduce the consumption of single-use plastic cups and food containers and promote reuse. Last year, this led to a decrease in residual waste by up to 40% and sweeping waste by up to 60% in open city events, and a decrease in total waste per visitor by 63% at a closed festival. To assist organisers and municipal authorities in the transition, OVAM is organising a workshop on reusable catering materials on 6 March, as the new event season approaches.
