The Government of Catalonia, through ACR+ member ARC, promotes a pilot campaign to collect mobile phones in four shops in Catalonia, in collaboration with various entities and with the funding of the extended producer responsibility scheme "ECOASIMELEC". The mobile phones will be collected for the social organisations “Trastos” and Fundación “Trinijove” and classified into two groups: suitable for reuse and recycling. If their condition allows them to be reused, technologies will be used to erase the data and, at the same time, trace the final destination of the handsets to ensure that their useful life is extended.
This campaign aims to encourage the participation of consumers and distribution companies in the collection of WEEE and, in particular, mobile phones. It is estimated that 2.5 million mobile phones were sold in Catalonia in 2020, i.e. 5 mobile phones per minute.
