On 1 October 2018, ACR+ member Madrid Municipality started the second phase of the collection of organic waste with the gradual extension to 12 districts encompassing 1.9 million inhabitants. The implementation of the selective collection of organic waste began in 2017 with a pilot project in 17 pioneering areas and is part of the city’s Waste Prevention and Management Strategy. It will be completed in 2019, reaching all the districts of the city. Since the beginning of the month, two additional neighbourhoods have been equipped with new containers to collect organic waste. They will be joined by 5 other neighbourhood in November and 2 in December. Between November 2017 and August 2018, 13,442 tonnes of organic waste were collected in the pilot neighbourhoods, covering 255,000 inhabitants.
