Greater Pamplona | Expansion of the bio-waste management system in rural areas
Greater Pamplona is implementing a new phase to expand its “kilometre zero” biowaste management system in rural areas. This approach prioritises on-site composting of household organic waste and green residues, using domestic composting as the main method, supported by community composting and centralised shredding points for pruning waste. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage organic matter through smart containers in urban areas, door-to-door collection in industrial zones, and localised composting in rural settings.
This system is already in use in several rural communities, benefiting 22 000 residents, and has shown notable success, such as an 82% increase in composting participation in southern villages in 2023. This system reduces collection and transportation costs, lowers emissions, and transforms waste into valuable compost while fostering environmental awareness.
