Starting from 1 September 2023, event organisers in ACR+ member Wallonia must adhere to a new regulation making it mandatory to use reusable cups for all cultural, recreational, sporting, folklore, and leisure events, whether they are held indoors or outdoors. This provision is part of the new decree's measures on waste, circularity of materials and public cleanliness. The ban applies to street traders and traders whose fixed establishments are located within the premises or spaces dedicated to the event.
Single-use plastic cups have contributed significantly to the volume of waste generated during festive events. As an illustrative example, during the Walloon Festivities in 2019, 1.5 million single-use plastic cups were used, which represents 30 tonnes of waste otherwise destined for incineration.
