The results of separate waste collection in ACR+ member Area Metropolitana de Barcelona during 2020 have continued the growth trend showed during 2019, after almost a decade of stagnation at 35% was overcome in 2018. The collection rate was 38.4%, 0.6 percentage points higher than the 37.8% of a year ago. At the same time, waste generation has decreased, especially the residual waste fraction. Despite being an improvement, these figures fall short of the targets set by the European Union, which were to reach 50% by 2020.

In a year marked by the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the exceptional nature of the situation may have introduced distortions in the natural evolution of the rates. However, the trends already observed in 2019 have been maintained and, in general, all indicators have improved compared to a year ago.
