Workshop showcases systemic circular solutions

To highlight ongoing circular solutions funded by the European Union's Horizon programme, the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative's (CCRI) Coordination Support Office recently hosted a workshop on 16 January, which brought together over 50 participants from various projects and initiatives. It aimed to strengthen collaboration and promote knowledge sharing among these projects. Additionally, it also sought to highlight project results, support their dissemination, and enhance synergies within the CCRI community.

Among the newer initiatives was the CSSboost project, represented by the University of Crete. The University of Crete highlighted the project's methodology for deploying pilot cases in Crete, the Marche region in Italy, the north Schwartzwald in Germany, and the city of Lisbon. Each location has a specific value chain the project aims to address.

The workshop also examined the initial results and challenges of more established projects. Value chains receiving particular attention included biobased side and waste streams, construction, plastics, and packaging. Key challenges discussed were stakeholder engagement, product placement, and consumption patterns of materials and resources. Other barriers included the need for greater collaboration among policymakers and increased willingness within the public sector to advance circular solutions. Regional and national circular economy plans, and their implementation were identified as crucial drivers for progress.
