EWWR 2025 to tackle WEEE

The 2025 edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) will centre on one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Europe: waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). From mobile phones and household appliances to medical devices and photovoltaic panels, WEEE poses a significant environmental and health challenge due to the hazardous materials it contains. Despite 14.4 million tonnes of electronic equipment being placed on the EU market annually, only 5 million tonnes of WEEE are collected for proper disposal and recycling. This year's EWWR campaign will emphasise the importance of reuse, repair, and sustainable consumption to reduce demand for new electronic products and minimise the environmental footprint of modern technology.

EWWR 2025 will encourage individuals, businesses, and policymakers to rethink their approach to electronic waste, advocating for circular solutions that preserve valuable resources and limit the harmful impact of extraction and disposal. The campaign will also highlight the role of critical raw materials in modern electronics and the need for improved recycling processes to recover these finite resources. By raising awareness and promoting responsible consumer behaviour, EWWR 2025 aims to drive real change in the way electronic and electrical devices are used, maintained, and discarded.
