The department for city management of The Hague is primarily responsible for the design, use and maintenance of public spaces, green areas and beaches in the city. This includes the collection and treatment of municipal waste from households. Waste collection has been outsourced to a public company of which the municipality is the sole shareholder. Waste treatment is being done by private companies, mainly located in the Rotterdam area.
