Region of Tuscany

The Region of Tuscany is a regional authority located in central Italy with an area of about 23,000 square kilometres (8,900 square miles) and a population of about 3.8 million inhabitants. Tuscany is known for its landscapes, history, artistic legacy, and its influence on European culture.

Fighting climate change is a top priority for the Region of Tuscany. Therefore, its Directorate for Energy and environment has been working for the last few years in defining and updating a circular economy and a climate neutral regional plans.

In Tuscany, geothermal power accounts for about 30% of the total electric energy production in Tuscany. The total energy from Geothermal was 5,660 GWh in 2015. There are 33 active geothermal plants with a total capacity of 772 MW.

At the European level, the Region of Tuscany is leader of new created partnership on Geothermal power within the Energy Smart specialisation (S3) Platform The role of this S3 Platform is to provide information, methodologies, expertise and advice to national and regional policy makers, as well as promote mutual learning, trans-national cooperation and contribute to academic debates around the concept of Smart Specialisation
