Reusable nappies subsidy scheme in Leuven

For years now the inter municipality EcoWerf promotes, with the support from the province of Flemish Brabant, the reusable diaper. Already 16 municipalities, part of EcoWerf, currently financially support the purchase of diapers. Each baby produces diapers during a period of 2.5 years for an amount of about 1400 kg. This corresponds to an annual amount of more than 30 trash bags full of disposable diapers!

Considering that children to the age of 2.5 year use nappies one could consider that at any time 250 families (children) are participating in the program, representing +/- 8% of the children between 0 – 2.5 years in Leuven. The reusable diaper of today is therefore a low-waste and environmentally friendly alternative to the disposable diaper. It also saves a lot of money using it without compromising the comfort of children. Modern reusable nappies have since improved and are in no ways comparable to the cotton cloth of the past.  Each year an information evening about diapers is organized by EcoWerf its use to explain the many prejudices and the world to help.
