ACR+ member Reloop has released their latest factsheet on consumer participation in deposit return systems (DRS). This factsheet is based on a thorough review of available data from consumer surveys related to existing DRS. The review process involved an analysis of consumer attitudes and behaviours towards DRS, with a particular focus on factors that influence consumer participation and engagement. Numerous barriers may deter consumers from engaging with a DRS. Most of these barriers are linked to user convenience in terms of return point locations and consumer experience while returning containers. Policymakers can enhance consumer engagement in DRS by understanding the primary motivators and barriers to participation and designing systems accordingly. Research has identified several strategies to boost engagement, including offering multiple payment methods for deposit refunds.
