AMIU Genova 80pxAlmost 70 tonnes of coffee capsules collected in Genoa in 2021, an increase of 17% compared to the previous year. Launched in 2011, the “From Bean (of coffee) to Grain (of rice)” project allows customers to return their used aluminium capsules to over 140 collection points in 79 Italian cities, including Genoa. Once collected by ACR+ member AMIU, the capsules are sent for processing and recovery at a plant in the province of Brescia, where the aluminium is separated from the coffee. The aluminium is destined for the foundries to start the recycling process that will transform it into new objects, while the coffee ends up in the composting plant for its transformation into compost, which is then given to a rice plant in the province of Novara.
