Case studies from ACR+ members Paris and its multi-driven approach to tackling food waste, and Porto, involving ACR+ member LIPOR, were highlighted in the Zero Waste Europe/SLow Food briefing “Reducing food waste at the local level”.

The key initiatives undertaken by the city of Paris to tackle food waste are: reducing food waste in public procurement; involving Parisian shops and food markets to fight food waste; raising awareness among citizens; the door-to-door collection of separated organic waste; and collecting and transforming organic waste into bio fertilizer. The city of Porto has already started implementing an integrated roadmap on food trying to build a sustainable local food system. It is divided into 4 blocks: promotion of local agriculture; food waste prevention; bio-waste management; and raising citizens’ and local actors’ awareness.
