Zero Waste Scotland 190pxScotland’s environmental organisations are teaming up to tackle the dire effects caused by single-use face covering litter in the environment. ACR+ member Zero Waste Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Marine Conservation Society have joined forces to raise awareness of the issue and promote the benefits of reusable face coverings, with the aim of reducing the impact of this latest pollutant to the streets, coast, countryside and waterways.

The partnership comes after Marine Conservation Society published the results of its Great British Beach Clean and revealed Covid-related litter, such as face coverings or gloves, was found on almost a quarter (23.5%) of Scotland’s beaches. Single-use face coverings cannot be recycled and should be placed in the general waste bin after use. In recent months used disposable masks have been increasingly found contaminating local authority recycling collections across Scotland.
