The Scottish Parliament voted to approve Regulations which will establish Scotland’s Deposit Scheme to boost recycling of single-use drinks containers. The scheme will be available across all of Scotland from 1 July 2022 and will see people pay a 20p deposit on metal cans and PET plastic and glass bottles, refunded when they are returned for recycling. ACR+ member Zero Waste Scotland has supported the Scottish Government on the consultation with island communities, feedback from the Scottish Parliament’s Environment Committee and stakeholder input which led to changes in the regulations. These include a commitment to review the performance of the scheme by October 2026, including the deposit level, materials and the collection targets. Zero Waste Scotland will continue to work with partners, as Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme enters a new phase under industry leadership, as part of its role to promote and facilitate more and better recycling and the development of a circular economy.
