On 04 February 2019, ACR+ member the Municipality of Sofia launched a campaign for the reduction of food waste. The campaign aims to raise awareness of food waste among young children and to promote food as a valuable resource and therefore responsible attitudes towards food consumption and disposal. To this end, a “superhero”, the Carrot Mori, will visit 30 metropolitan municipal kindergartens and meet over 1,000 children by May 2019. Nearly 20% of the household waste generated in Sofia in 2018, or 600,000 tonnes, was food waste.

The initiative to reduce food waste is part of the Sofia Municipality's commitment to the TRIFOCAL international project. ACR+ members EMWR, Brussels Environment and Barcelona are among the cities that are interested in TRIFOCAL and its results, having been designated as future replication cities for the project.
