Lisbon | Selective collection of organic waste extended to new areas of the city
The Municipality of Lisbon has expanded its selective collection of organic waste to new areas of the city, covering both food and green waste. With this extension, the collection of food waste now includes five parishes, totalling 3 280 buildings and 42 000 homes. Urban Hygiene teams are distributing small containers and organic bins, informing residents about the materials to be separated. Additionally, the city plans to further expand the green waste collection, which currently covers eight parishes and was previously available only upon request.
These initiatives are part of Lisbon's strategy to meet recycling targets and promote the Circular Economy, aiming to reduce unsorted waste by about 40%. Funded by the Environmental Fund of the Portuguese government through the RecolhaBio 2023 project, the initiative has a budget of EUR 226 755 and supports Lisbon’s sustainability goals, carbon neutrality, and sustainable waste management.
