OVAM | Campaign to encourage reusable bags during shopping

16 December 2024 Members' News

Research from Eurostat shows that Belgians use the fewest disposable bags in Europe, averaging only 3.9 plastic bags per year, well below the European average of 77. However, OVAM's research reveals that while reusable bags are common in supermarkets, they're often forgotten during regular shopping trips, leading to the accumulation of new bags. To raise awareness, OVAM launched a campaign just before the holiday shopping season.

According to Flemish Environment Minister, Belgium has made significant progress in reducing disposable plastic bag use, with a remarkable 86% reduction in the past four years. The campaign urges consumers to keep using reusable bags, not just for groceries but also while shopping in stores. Influencers joined the effort, promoting the campaign "KWITTEN" (Quit Using Disposable Bags), which encourages small changes to avoid disposables.
