Leading the way in sustainable public events

The Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform recently featured our work in an article discussing sustainable public events. We were interviewed based on our expertise and role in the MINEV project, an initiative focused on minimising waste and enhancing sustainability at public events. Recognising the significant environmental impact of gatherings like concerts, festivals, and conferences, MINEV brings together several European regions to develop and implement policies for circular economy, waste management, and climate neutrality. Key strategies highlighted include prioritizing venues with robust environmental credentials, such as energy-efficient systems and comprehensive recycling programs, and promoting sustainable event management systems like ISO 20121. The platform emphasises the importance of understanding attendee behaviour to effectively implement sustainable practices, noting that different demographics and event types require tailored approaches.
The feature further showcases practical examples of waste reduction, such as the Anatolia College's comprehensive waste management strategy in Greece, which includes collaboration for waste collection and recycling. By educating attendees and demonstrating sustainable practices, events can serve as catalysts for broader behavioural change, benefiting both the environment and the community.
