International benchmark and cost analysis of automated vacuum waste collection projects

Author(s): ADEME
Already widely developed in the Nordic countries or in Spain, the technology of automated vacuum waste collection is still emerging in
France where it raises a growing interest by local authorities. Accordingly, a dozen French projects were launched recently, and four pilot projects in the Paris region benefited from a financial support from ADEME as an operation of demonstration. If the benefits of this technology in terms of improving the living environment make no doubt, its high investment costs as well as its energy intensiveness raise some questions.ADEME launched a benchmark study of recent automated vacuum waste collection projects implemented in other industrial countries so as to have a comparative analysis of costs, collection performances and key success factors of this technology allowing to enrich and put in perspective the results of the French projects’ assessment stud.
