EP Intergroup discusses ambition and sustainability for the next legislative term
The European Parliament Intergroup on “Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Development” recently convened on 19 November a high-level conference to outline its policy priorities for the upcoming legislative term. Held at the European Committee of the Regions, the event brought together Members of the European Parliament, representatives from EU institutions and UN agencies, private sector stakeholders, researchers, and environmental organisations. Discussions focused on pressing environmental challenges and sustainable solutions, with key policy areas including sustainable food systems, water resilience, circular economy and bioeconomy, clean energy, transport, and ocean governance.
The Intergroup, building on its 30-year legacy, aims to serve as a platform for cross-sectoral collaboration and science-based policymaking. The conference highlighted the urgent need for action on climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development. Contributing to the discussion, Françoise Bonnet, Secretary General of ACR+, emphasised the importance of the Intergroup in promoting circular economy policies. While acknowledging progress, she stressed the need to accelerate the transition to a circular economy by focusing on prosperity within planetary boundaries, addressing overconsumption, and prioritising waste reduction, reuse, and sustainable production. Ms. Bonnet also highlighted the crucial role of local and regional authorities in implementing circular economy policies and advocated for their direct involvement in decision-making processes, supported by adequate funding. The Intergroup's commitment to addressing these challenges through collaborative dialogue and informed policymaking underscores its crucial role in advancing EU and global sustainability goals.
