Brussels Environment

The Brussels-Capital Region counts nearly 1.2 million inhabitants, representing 181 nationalities. This makes Brussels one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Households in Brussels produce around 345,000 tonnes of waste per year, 40% of which is prepared for reuse or recycled. Amongst these, the main streams are: paper and cardboard, glass packaging, bulky waste, garden waste, PMC packaging, etc. The remaining 60% of household waste, that is not selectively collected, is incinerated. It is composed of 65% of organic material, mainly kitchen waste. To improve this, the RBC has generalised door-to-door bio-waste collection over its whole territory.
