The European Commission (EC) is carrying out an impact assessment in preparation for the revision of the Waste Framework Directive. ACR+ already contributed with a response to the Call for evidence of the Waste Framework Directive earlier this year. Now ACR+ has responded to the public consultation launched by the EC to collect additional evidence on existing performance; seek opinions and insights about the problem, the feasibility and possible impacts of alternative actions; gather examples of best practices and views on the subsidiarity of possible actions.
 
In its response, ACR+ stressed the need to set a prevention target to reduce municipal waste generation by 20% to be achieved by 2030 and 30% by 2035 (as proposed by Zero Waste Europe) as well as to define targets for more carbon-intensive fractions, such as food, textile and (plastic) packaging, and re-use targets for EEE, packaging, textiles and furniture. ACR+ believes that such targets shall act as strong drivers for setting effective prevention strategies and initiatives and improve the sharing of experience on effective instruments to actually decrease waste generation. In addition, ACR+ would like to highlight the need to improve monitoring of waste generation for specific fractions.
