New report highlights strong performance of glass recycling in Europe

Close the Glass Loop has published its latest report on the performance of packaging glass recycling in Europe, offering a detailed analysis of recycling efficiency across 20 countries. Based on data from over 80 Glass Cullet Recycling Facilities, which processed more than 60% of all collected glass packaging in 2022, the findings reinforce the success of Europe’s glass recycling system. The report confirms that 93% of materials entering these facilities were effectively recycled, with 85% re-melted into new bottles and jars, demonstrating the sector’s contribution to a circular economy. Additionally, it highlights the significant role of municipal waste collection systems, as 87% of recycled glass originated from post-consumer sources.

The report underscores the importance of local recycling efforts, with imported materials accounting for just 11% of total inputs. This further solidifies glass as a highly sustainable and regionally managed material.
