City of Warsaw
The Municipal Waste Management Departement of the Capital City of Warsaw is responsible for introduction and maintenance of the effective system of municipal waste management in Warsaw.
From August 1, 2014 it implemented new regulations in the entire city. Thenceforth Warsaw is divided into 9 areas that are being serviced by 3 waste collection companies. Requests and complaints services are provided by 19115 contact center for citizens and Helpdesk-OK intervention platform, thanks to which complaints start being processed in a matter of minutes after receiving. In Warsaw there's an IT system, which gets up to date data from GPS, RFID, and weights mounted on dustcarts. The combination of these data allows for full settlement of services: to know where, when and how much waste has been removed.
Jolanta Krzywiec, Acting Director from the Municipal Waste Management Departement of the City of Warsaw, replies to our questions.
ACR+: "What are the main challenges on your territory in the field of sustainable resource management?"
J.K.: "One of the important fields of our responsibilities is organising various actions within the framework of education and informational campaign. We promote selective waste collection rules and encourage waste prevention among citizens. Those actions are in accordance with main objectives of our policy that are reducing waste production and waste disposal in landfills. The waste should be primarily recycled or other recovery should be applied."
ACR+: "What are your priorities in sustainable resource management for the current year?"
J.K.: "We have already implemented new rules of sorting waste in 2014. Inhabitants of Warsaw collect waste on segregated dry, glass packaging and mixed waste. The main priority is to build consciousness and the knowledge that selective waste collection matters and influences the environment."
ACR+: "Could you share with us one of your main achievements, a successful experience and action implemented in the last months and/or year?"
J.K.: "After the introduction of the new system of municipal waste management in Warsaw we had a great amount of requests and complaints regarding the collection of waste, changed timetables and new rules. During one year we diminished number of complaints to 4 daily per disctrict.
