PREPSOILThe CISUTAC project, Circular & Sustainable Textiles & Clothing, aims to minimise the sector’s total environmental impact by developing sustainable, novel, and inclusive large-scale European value chains.

Project co-funded under the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union, 2022 – 2026

Highlights

ACR+ hosted an engaging stakeholder dialogue on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for promoting circularity in the EU textile sector, in collaboration with EURATEX, the EP Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity & Sustainable Development, and MEP Malte Gallée within the framework of the CISUTAC project. If you missed the event, the recording is available here.

{slider THE PROJECT}

CISUTAC aims to tackle current bottlenecks in the transition to circular textiles and clothing. For scale and significance, it focuses on polyester, cotton & cellulosic fibres (covering ca. 90% of textile materials) and products from 3 sub-sectors: garments, active goods and workwear. In this way, the project will have a representative view on the challenges the textile sector is facing for circular transition. CISUTAC follows a holistic approach covering the technical, sectoral and socio-economic levels. It will provide systemic innovations at these levels and perform 3 pilots to demonstrate their feasibility and value: (i) Repair and disassembly; (ii) Sorting for reuse and recycling; (iii) Circular garments through fibre-to-fibre recycling and design for circularity. To realise these pilots, semi-automated workstations will be developed. The project will analyse infrastructure and material flow, digitally enhance sorting operations and setup interventions with consumers. The project will bring significant impact of scale via its innovations on repair, dismantling, sorting and fibre-to-fibre recycling. CISUTAC will also raise awareness among EU citizens about the environmental impact of buying new clothes and the benefits of reusing, donating and shopping second hand textiles. Thanks to the stores, e-commerce platforms and social media networks of partners, CISUTAC expects to reach around two million people.

{slider ACTIVITIES}

ACR+ will lead the embedding of socio-economic aspects of textiles and clothing sector in local-regional Circular Economy Action Plans (CEAP), by guiding the analysis of citizens' engagement in local textile waste management systems, and developing guidelines for public authorities and policy-makers to integrate textiles in their CEAP.
